Avanti West Coast - reduced timetable travel advice

    Train companies affected

    Avanti West Coast

    Routes affected

    All Avanti West Coast routes

    Description

Avanti West Coast will operate a reduced timetable until further notice. This is due to the current industrial relations climate which has resulted in severe staff shortages in some grades. The reduced timetable is in place to ensure a reliable service is delivered so customers can travel with greater certainty. The decision to introduce this reduced timetable was not taken lightly, and Avanti West Coast are sorry for the enormous frustration and inconvenience this will cause.

You can find more details by clicking on the links below:

    ____________________________________________________

    Reduced Timetable Information:

Avanti West Coast are currently working hard to rebuild their timetable in a resilient and sustainable way that will allow them to gradually increase services without being reliant on traincrew overtime, which has fallen dramatically in recent weeks.

As a result, the weekday timetable for travel dates from Monday 12 September until further notice is yet to be confirmed. While the timetable is available on the Avanti West Coast website and app, some services are still subject to change or will not operate at all.

Ticket sales have been suspended for trains we know we're unable to run in the coming weeks to help minimise disruption.

When will the new timetable be confirmed?

While each new timetable is finalised, ticket sales have been suspended and reservations have been closed - this is to minimise the number of people disrupted. Avanti West Coast working hard to publish the timetables and release tickets as soon as possible. Click here to check the table to find out when your travel date's tickets are expected to be on sale.

    Which trains will be running?

Avanti West Coast plan to run at least one train an hour from London Euston to each of Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester and Birmingham. There will be trains to Edinburgh every two hours via the West Midlands. They aim to run extra services at peak times whenever possible, for example some hours there'll be three or even four trains running from London to Manchester.

They are also running shuttle services between Crewe and Holyhead, plus a limited through service between Euston and Chester once a day.

Avanti West Coast's priority is to give you a service you can rely on, so they're running this temporary timetable to work around staff shortages and avoid cancelling trains at short notice. More services will be added as we recruit and train more staff.

My train is cancelled - what are my options?

If your train is cancelled, your ticket will be accepted on the Avanti West Coast service before or after your original booked train. Alternatively, you can claim a full, fee-free refund from your point of purchase if you no longer wish to travel due to the amended timetable.

Will my seat reservation still be valid?

We're sorry to say that switching to the new timetable has caused a temporary problem with seat reservations and Avanti West Coast had to cancel some. This means that reservations booked before 8 August for travel up to and including 11 September are no longer valid, even if the time of your train hasn't changed.

Avanti West Coast are doing our best to put this right by making lots of unreserved seats available on trains. Staff will be happy to help you find somewhere to sit - just ask onboard and they'll point you in the right direction.

No need to worry if you made a reservation after 8 August - these are all still valid and your seat is reserved for you.

If you'd rather not travel, you can cancel your ticket and get a full refund.

It's a frustrating situation and Avanti West Coast are sorry. They're working hard to fix this tech issue so more customers can keep their pre-booked reservations. Please be assured that it will be sorted. From 12 September Avanti West Coast aim to be able to give you clear ticket info and there should be less of a problem with overcrowded trains.

Revised timetable between Salisbury and Exeter St Davids until the end of the day on Monday 31 October

    Train companies affected

    South Western Railway

    Routes affected

Between London Waterloo and Westbury / Yeovil Pen Mill / Exeter St Davids

    Description

A speed restriction is in place over defective track between Tisbury and Gillingham. As a result a temporary revised timetable is in operation between Salisbury, Yeovil Junction and Exeter St Davids.

The revised timetable is expected to be in place until the end of the day on Monday 31 October.

    Customer Advice:

In order to provide a more reliable service, a temporary revised timetable is operating between Salisbury, Yeovil Junction and Exeter St Davids. If you are intending to travel on this route, please check your journey before you travel as journey times will be extended and some services will not operate.

Why is the speed restriction in place?

The very hot and dry conditions of recent weeks have dried out the clay soil beneath the embankments. When clay dries out, it shrinks. This has caused track defects along the line between Tisbury and Gillingham, which means trains cannot run at full speed.

Because the clay soil is still shrinking, Network Rail can not make the necessary repairs to the track right now; instead they need to wait until the shrinking has stopped to make a long term repair.

    Check before you travel:

You can check your journey until Sunday 16 October using the National Rail Enquiries real-time Journey Planner as the revised timetable has now been uploaded until that date. For journeys from Monday 17 October, please check back closer to the time of travel.

You are also advised to check again on the day of travel in case of any short notice delays, cancellations and alterations.

You can find the location of your bus replacement by checking station signs or by searching for your station on our station information pages.

    More information:

The extremely hot and dry conditions this summer have caused the soil beneath the track bed on the Wickford - Southminster line to dry out. As a result, speed restrictions have had to be imposed along the route to ensure safe operation of train services until the track has been realigned.

The extent of the problem and the equipment needed to address it is such that it is expected to take three weeks before trains can run normally again. To provide a more consistent service in the meantime, trains may be cancelled, delayed or revised until Friday 16 September.

Disruption between Ely and Kings Lynn until the end of the day on Sunday 18 September

    Train companies affected

    Great Northern

    Routes affected

Great Northern between London Kings Cross and Kings Lynn

    Description

A speed restriction is in place over defective track between Ely and Kings Lynn. As a result, trains running between these stations may be delayed or revised.

Disruption is expected until at least the end of the day on Sunday 18 September.

    Customer Advice:

Great Northern are currently having to run an amended timetable between London Kings Cross and Ely / Kings Lynn. This will be ongoing until at least 18 September.

Journey planners will be updated 24 hours in advance, so please ensure that you check before travelling.

    • London Kings Cross to Kings Lynn services will run between Kings Lynn and Cambridge only
    • London Kings Cross to Ely services will not run
    • There will be very few 'fast' services between London Kings Cross and Cambridge. You should travel from London St Pancras International, or use stopping services from London Kings Cross
    • There will also be very limited non-stop services between Kings Cross, Royston and Letchworth, as the majority of these trains are running between Cambridge and Kings Lynn only. You should travel via St Pancras where semi-fast services to and from Cambridge are available.

What does this mean for my journey?

Journeys between King's Lynn and Cambridge will be extended by up to 20 minutes due to the speed restriction. If you are travelling between London and Kings Lynn, you will need to change trains at Cambridge. This could increase your journey time by an additional 60 minutes.

What alternative trains can I use?

You can use the following services at no additional cost:

    • London Kings Cross - Cambridge (stopping service)
    • Brighton - Cambridge (using London St Pancras International as a changeover point)

Why is this happening, and what about next week?

Network Rail has identified a number of track defects on the line between Cambridge and Kings Lynn. These defects are a result of the recent spell of prolonged hot weather, which has dried out the ground beneath the track. This can cause the track to move, making it unsafe to run trains at full speed.

Network Rail are currently working on a repair, and will update you as work progresses.
